Donuts in a Vacant Cubicle

We have donuts at work today! Here's a poem I wrote.

Donuts in a vacant cubicle,
They ponder their new-found home.
And while they’re together in a box,
They still feel quite alone.

They hope to soon be part of you,
Maybe just for a while,
And if they like you, and you like them,
Maybe they’ll make you smile.

As you ponder your extra pounds,
Think of your new found friends.
That yummy donut, if you don’t exercise,
Will be with you till the end.

An Interesting Combination

What am I doing tonight?

Reading this article on someone getting a tattoo (not that I would want one, myself), while listening to Judy Collins.

Nothing Lasts Forever, Especially on the Internet

I like reading web comics. Every week, a new episode to read. Unfortunately, they do not last forever. Here are some I used to read all of the time.

Radiskull & Devil Doll

Back in 2003, Joe Sparks created Radiskull & Devil Doll. There was eight episodes, and then it ended. We never found out what happened to Devil Doll, and his girlfriend, Candy Angel. You can find all eight episodes at www.atomfilms.com.

Loonscape

Loonscape was a web comic about the MMORPG RuneScape. It was created by Garrett Morrison in July 2006, and had 43 episodes before ending. www.drunkduck.com/Loonscape

Fr33 St0ff Plz!

This was another web comic about RuneScape. It was created by Fnaa in October 2005, and had 73 episodes before stopping, never to be updated again. www.fr33st0ffplz.comicgenesis.com

Gone With the Blastwave

This web comic is about soldiers in a post apocalyptic world. It was created by Kimmo Lemetti in 2005. It had 38 episodes before it, too, gave up the ghost. www.blastwavecomic.com

Why don’t these sites get updated? Unless they are making money at their creations, they probably get tired of updating it. People move on, to other projects. So, if you see a web comic you like, give them some money. Maybe they will keep updating it.

Science Fiction Music

There are a certain number of songs that have a definite SF theme to them. The obvious ones are from SF movies. But there are other songs that will pop up from time to time.

Mr. Spaceman – The Byrds

From the sixties. Another way to take a trip: hitch a ride with a spaceman!

Hey, Mr. Spaceman
Won't you please take me along
I won't do anything wrong
Hey, Mr. Spaceman
Won't you please take me along for a ride

And here’s a comic for the same song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5Q8-ARJwb0

Come Sail Away – Styx

Styx had a similar idea in the seventies.

I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies

From: OzzyOsbourne

Close Encounters of the Third Kind – John Williams

Contact with extraterrestrials was the whole point of the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

From: DarkLordSealskin

Meco did a disco version of the song:

‘39 – Queen

I love this song. It deals with the time differential between people on Earth and people on a space ship traveling close to the speed of light. Time on the spaceship would slow down compared to time on Earth.

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

The sad reunion of the spaceman and his wife, who is much older than him now.

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand
Cannot heal me like your hand
For my life, still ahead, pity me.

Flash Gordon – Queen

A happier song is this one. Here’s the trailer for the movie from 1980.

And here’s Queen performing the song.

Star Wars – Meco

And we can’t forget Star Wars. The original movie came out during the Disco age of the late 70’s.

From: mtanner47

You Got Lucky – Tom Petty

Not a SF song, but a video about a future like the Mad Max movies.

The 30-Second Video

I just don't have much time tonight. How about a video? Well, only if it is short.

From: ArtieTSMITW

I heard somewhere that nowadays, people won't pay attention to most videos that are longer than 30 seconds.

Nah, that took too much time. How about the 2-Second Video?

Gordon Freeman calls Coast to Coast AM

This is funny. I don't play Half-Life, but Gordon Freeman is a character from that game.

Coast to Coast AM covers all sorts of conspiracies. To be a good talk show host in that case, you must allow people to talk about all sorts of things, without making judgments about the people calling.

George Noory does a good job of that. Did he realize that the call was a joke? Probably not, but it sounded good, so he ran with it. It is fun to listen to his radio show.

From: Clownblood

From Saturday morning, January 19, 2008. Someone posing as Freeman calls in on open lines. George Noory is apparently oblivious.

NOTE: To eliminate any confusion, I was not the one to call in. God bless the person that did though.

Journey Has a New Lead Singer

I prefer bands to tour with the lead singer they were famous with, but Arnel Pineda is a good replacement for Steve Perry. Listen, and decide for yourself.

Arnel Pineda with his band The Zoo, belts with one of their best pieces "Faithfully". The best ever local version of Journey's hit song. Check out their album here: http://www.titikpilipino.com/album/?albumid=1388

The Leningrad Cowboys and The Red Army Choir

Something fun for April Fools Day.

From: lmj22

The Leningrad Cowboys is a Finnish rock and roll band famous for its humorous songs and concerts featuring the Soviet Red Army Choir.

Currently, the band has eleven Cowboys and two Leningrad Ladies. The songs, all somewhat influenced by polka and progressive rock, and performed in English, have themes such as 'vodka', 'tractors', 'rockets', and 'Genghis Khan', as well as folkloric Russian songs, rock and roll ballads and covers from bands as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, all with lots of humour.

-----------------------------------

The Red Army Choir (Choir Aleksandrov) is a performing ensemble that served as the official army choir of the former Soviet Union's Red Army. The choir consists of a male choir, an orchestra, and a dance ensemble. The songs they perform range from Russian folk tunes to Church hymns, operatic arias and popular music.

In 1991, The Red Army Choir participated in Roger Waters' The Wall concert celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. They performed an anti-war song "Bring the Boys Back Home."

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Red Army Choir has continued performing, entertaining audiences both inside and outside Russia.
